Does National News Coverage
from Region to Region?

Every day that Parliament sits, Senators and MPs receive news compilations from across the country. These compilations help them know what issues are important in each region.

Looking at news sources from across Canada, group together stories that discuss the same issue, noting the source from which each was taken.

How does geography influence the coverage of certain issues? Why do you think this is?

Account for differences in coverage using the following as a guide:

  • Are the stories given the same amount of space in each source?
  • Do all stories reflect the same concerns?
  • Can you reach the same conclusions from each story?
  • How do the headlines differ?
  • Was there more than one item about the issue in the news source?
