On the shelves

Take a look at our extensive print collection.

The collection
The Library’s collection has approximately 650,000 titles.

The oldest book
Published in 1558, Les singularitez de la France antarctique, autrement nommée Amerique, & de plusieurs terres & isles découvertes de nostre temps by André Thevet is the Library’s oldest book.

The oldest newspaper
The first edition of the Quebec Gazette, published on June 21, 1764, is the collection’s oldest newspaper. It is bilingual.

The books saved from the flames
The rare book room contains many treasures, including approximately 200 books that were saved from a fire in the legislature in Montreal in 1849. Amazingly, the charred remains of more books were discovered during an archaeological dig on the site in 2013.
