Custom search allows you to search all the research publications available on the public site using structured metadata (author, title, year of publication, index terms from the Library Taxonomy, type of publication, abstract). Publications that are no longer on the public site are available through the Library catalogue.
Google Search allows you to perform full text searches of all the research publications available on the public site, with the exception of HillNotes. To search for a HillNote, please use custom search or visit HillNotes.ca for a full text search.
By default, terms are joined by the AND operator. However, you can also use:
- the OR operator between two terms or expressions to search for one of the options;
- a hyphen (-) directly before a word to exclude it from the search;
- quotation marks (") to search for a specific expression;
- an asterisk (*) as a wildcard to omit words.
Google Search:
- Automatically searches synonyms and words of the same family, unless you are searching a specific expression;
- Is not case sensitive (upper case and lower case) and ignores diacritical marks (accents, diaereses, cedillas);
- Places more importance on words appearing first;
- Does not allow stemming for wildcard searches.
Enter the name of one author at a time, then press the “Enter” key and enter another author’s name, if necessary.
Automatic suggestions from the dropdown menu are limited to documents that match the other search criteria selected (subject, type of publication, year of publication).
A search by key terms uses metadata (title, index terms from the Library Taxonomy, key words and abstract) associated with a document to generate results.
Enter one key term at a time, then press “Enter” and enter another key term, if necessary.
Automatic suggestions from the dropdown menu are limited to documents that match the other criteria selected (subject, type of publication, year of publication).
Select a collection from the dropdown list to access a group of selected publications on a specific theme.
These filters retrieve results for the year of the original publication and, if applicable, the year when a publication was revised. Revisions are identified by the “Revised” label in the search results. Values are inclusive, so entering “2016” as value 1 and “2019” as value 2 will find documents published or revised in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Fill:
- Both values to retrieve a publication published or revised within a specific period;
- Only "Year published, from" to retrieve a publication published or revised from a specific year onwards;
- Only "Year published, to" to retrieve a publication published or revised before a specific year.
By default, the search operator “AND” is used to perform the author and keyword search.
For example, author 1 AND author 2 means both authors need to be associated with the publication for it to be displayed in the results.
Click the circular option button beside “OR” to use it as the search operator.
For example, keyword 1 OR keyword 2 means at least one of the authors needs to be associated with the publication for it to be displayed in the results.
Subjects are associated with the Library Taxonomy index terms used for a document. A document can be listed under more than one subject.
