NOMINATION PROCESS

Eligibility

To ensure that Canada’s official languages are equitably represented, the person selected alternates every two years between poets who work primarily in English and poets who work primarily in French.


Nomination of the 10th Parliamentary Poet Laureate

On 1 February 2023, the Speaker of the Senate, the Hon. George J. Furey, and the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Hon. Anthony Rota, announced the appointment of Marie-Célie Agnant for a two-year term as the tenth Parliamentary Poet Laureate.

Criteria for Selection

Candidates must:

  • Have made significant contributions to the literary community;
  • Have a substantial record demonstrating literary excellence;
  • Be available to travel throughout Canada to promote the value of poetry; and
  • Be available to participate in parliamentary events, as required.

Process for Nomination

The nomination period for the 2025–2026 term will open in 2024, and the poet selected will be expected to work primarily in English.
