MARQUETTE, Manitoba (1871 - 1979)


Proclamation, Canada Gazette 5-1-1871

As specified by "An Act to Amend and Continue the Act 32 and 33 Victoria, Chapter 3; and to establish and provide for the Government of the Province of Manitoba", the proclamation defines the boundaries of Marquette.

Electoral District number Four, to compose all the settlements on the Assiniboine and Lake Manitoba, and all other settlements to the westward of the western line of Electoral District number One, such Electoral District number Four to be called and known as the Electoral District of Marquette.

By-Election:   As a result of Manitoba joining Confederation, 15-7-1870

The electoral district of Marquette, which shall comprise the rural municipalities of Odanah, Clan William, Harrison, Saskatchewan, Blanchard, Strathclair, Shoal Lake, Oak River, Miniota, Archie, Birtle, Ellice, Russell, Silver Creek, Rossburn, Shell River, Boulton, the town of Minnedosa, the town of Birtle and the town of Rapid City, and also all the unorganised territory lying between the western boundary of the province of Manitoba and the easterly limit of range seventeen, west of the principal meridian, north of township eighteen in ranges seventeen and twenty-two, inclusive, west of the principal meridian, and also lying north of township twenty-eight in ranges twenty-three to twenty-nine, inclusive, west of the principal meridian, to the northern boundary of the province of Manitoba.

The electoral district of Marquette, bounded as follows:- Commencing at the western boundary of the province of Manitoba where it is intersected by the north boundary of the twelfth township; thence easterly along the north boundary of the twelfth townships to the meridian between the sixteenth and seventeenth ranges, west of the principal meridian; thence northerly along the said meridian between the sixteenth and seventeenth ranges to the north boundary of the eighteenth township; thence westerly along the said north boundary of the eighteenth township to the meridian between the seventeenth and eighteenth ranges, west of the principal meridian; thence northerly along the said meridian between the seventeenth and eighteenth ranges to the north boundary of the twentieth township; thence westerly along the north boundary of the twentieth township to the meridian between the twenty second and twenty-third ranges west of the principal meridian; thence northerly along the said meridian between the twenty-second and the twenty-third ranges to the north boundary of the twenty-second township; thence westerly along the north boundary of the twenty-second township to the meridian between the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth ranges, west of the principal meridian; thence northerly along the said meridian between the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth ranges to the north boundary of the twenty-eight township; thence westerly along the north boundary of the twenty-eight township to the said western boundary of the province of Manitoba; thence southerly along the said western boundary of the province of Manitoba to the point of commencement.
