Indian Affairs and Northern Development (1966-10-01 - 2019-07-14)

The office of Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources was abolished and the office of Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development was created by Statute 14-15 Elizabeth II, c. 25, assented to June 16, 1966 and proclaimed in force October 1, 1966.

    Effective June 13, 2011, for general public use, the new applied title for the department under the Government of Canada's Federal Identity Program (FIP) is Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC). This change has no impact on the mandate of the department or the Minister's statutory responsibilities.

    On November 4, 2015, as part of the creation of the new ministry, several changes were made to the machinery of government to reflect the government's priorities.
    The name of the department has changed from:

    Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada to Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada

    On August 28, 2017, the Prime Minister announced the dissolution of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) and the creation of two new departments: Indigenous Services Canada and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada.

    Department Dissolution
    On July 15, 2019, legislation dissolving Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada and formally establishing the mandates of 2 new departments, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs (CIRNAC) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), came into effect.
