This portfolio was established by Order in Council on July 1, 1867. It was given statutory basis by Statute 31 Victoria, c. 40, assented to May 22, 1868 and proclaimed in force October 1, 1868.

    Department Change
    The offices of Minister of Militia and Defence and Minister of the Naval Service were abolished and the office of Minister of National Defence was created by Statute 12-13 George V, c. 34, assented to June 28, 1922 and proclaimed in force January 1, 1923.

    Department Change
    On February 10, 1922 by Order in Council pursuant to the Public Service Rearrangement and Transfer of Duties Act, the powers, duties and functions of the Minister of the Naval Servive were transferred from the Minister of Marine and Fisheries to the Minister of Militia and Defence.

    This portfolio was created by Statute 9-10 Edward VII, c. 43, assented to May 4, 1910. The department of the Naval Service was to be presided over by the Minister of Marine and Fisheries, who was to be the Minister of the Naval Service.

    The offices of Minister of Militia and Defence and Minister of the Naval Service were abolished and the office of Minister of National Defence was created by Statute 12-13 George V, c. 34, assented to June 28, 1922 and proclaimed in force January 1, 1923.
