This portfolio was created by Statute 6-7 Edward VII, c. 29, assented to April 27, 1907. The department was to be presided over by the minister of another department who was to be named by the Governor in Council and who was to be called "The Minister of Mines". The Minister of Inland Revenue was the first to be named Minister of Mines.

    The offices of Minister of Immigration and Colonization, Minister of the Interior, Minister of Mines and Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs were abolished and the office of Minister of Mines and Resources was created by Statute 1 Edward VIII, c. 33, assented to June 23, 1936 and proclaimed in force December 1, 1936.

    The Minister of Immigration and Colonization and the Minister of Labour were designated to be ex officio the Minister of Mines on August 7, 1930 and February 3, 1932 respectively.

    Department Change
    During the 16th Ministry, Crerar, who was both Minister of Immigration and Colonization and Minister of the Interior, was named Minister of Mines.

    Department Change
    The Minister of the Interior was designated to be ex officio the Minister of Mines on December 31, 1919. He held this function until August 6, 1930.
  • 1911-10-10
    Department Change
    The Minister of Inland Revenue, the Minister of the Interior and the Secretary of State of Canada were designated to be ex officio the Minister of Mines on October 10, 1911, March 30, 1912 and February 10, 1913 respectively.
