Multiculturalism and Citizenship (1991-04-21 - 1996-07-11)

The office of Minister of Multiculturalism and Citizenship was created by Statute 38-39 Elizabeth II, c. 3 (1991), assented to on January 17, 1991 and in force pursuant to Order in Council P.C. 1991-758 (SI/1991-58)

    Department Change
    The office of Minister of Citizenship and Immigration was recreated by Statute 42-43 Elizabeth II, c. 31 (1994), assented to and in force June 23, 1994.

    Department Change
    On November 4, 1993, the Minister was formally appointed to the existing portfolio (Secretary of State of Canada) from which the new portfolio (Citizenship and Immigration) was being created. The new responsibilities, however, took full effect immediately.

    Department Change
    During the 25th Ministry, the portfolio of Multiculturalism and Citizenship was to be restructured and named Citizenship pending the eventual passage of a Government Organization Act. Until passage of the new departmental statute, the Minister had been formally appointed to the existing portfolio from which the new portfolio was being created. The new responsibilities, however, took full effect immediately. Parliament was dissolved before this change could take place.

    The office of Minister of Citizenship and Immigration was recreated by Statute 42-43 Elizabeth II, c. 31 (1994), assented to and in force June 23, 1994.

  • Canadian Heritage (1996-07-12 -  )

    The offices of Minister of Communications, and Minister of Multiculturalism and Citizenship were abolished and the office of Minister of Canadian Heritage was created by Statute 42-43-44 Elizabeth II, c. 11 (1995), assented to June 15, 1995 and in force July 12, 1996.
