National Health and Welfare (1944-10-18 - 1996-07-11)

The office of Minister of Pensions and National Health was abolished and the offices of Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of National Health and Welfare were created by Statute 8 George VI, c. 19, assented to June 30, 1944, and Statute 8 George VI, c. 22, assented to July 24, 1944, respectively, both Acts proclaimed in force October 18, 1944.

    Department Change
    On November 4, 1993, the Minister was formally appointed to the existing portfolio (National Health and Welfare) from which the new portfolio (Health) was being created. The new responsibilities, however, took full effect immediately.

    Department Change
    The office of Minister of National Health and Welfare was restructured and the office of Minister of Health created by Statute 42-43-44-45 Elizabeth II, c. 8 (1996), assented to May 29, 1996 and in force July 12, 1996.
  • 1993-06-25
    Department Change
    During the 25th Ministry, the portfolio of National Health and Welfare was to be restructured and named Health pending the eventual passage of a Government Organization Act. Until passage of the new departmental statute, the Minister had been formally appointed to the existing portfolio from which the new portfolio was being created. The new responsibilities, however, took effect immediately. Parliament was dissolved before this change could take effect.

    The Department of Health Act and the office of Minister of Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment were abolished and the office of Minister of Pensions and National Health was created by Statute 18-19 George V, c. 39, assented to June 11, 1928.

    The office of Minister of National Health and Welfare was restructured and the office of Minister of Health created by Statute 42-43-44-45 Elizabeth II, c. 8 (1996), assented to May 29, 1996 and in force July 12, 1996.
