This portfolio was established by Order in Council on July 1, 1867. It was given statutory basis by Statute 31 Victoria, c. 10, assented to December 21, 1867 and proclaimed in force April 1, 1868.

Department Change
Pursuant to Statute 63-64 Victoria, c. 24, assented to July 18, 1900, the Department of Labour was under the control of the minister designated by the Governor in Council to administer the aforesaid Act. Mulock, Aylesworth and Lemieux were so designated during their terms as Postmaster General. Lemieux held the office until May 18, 1909.

Department Change
The office of Postmaster General was abolished when the Post Office Department became a Crown Corporation known as the Canada Post Corporation pursuant to the Canada Post Corporation Act, assented to April 23, 1981 and proclaimed in force on October 16, 1981.
