Indian Affairs (1868-05-22 - 1936-11-30)

This portfolio was created by Statute 31 Victoria, c. 42, assented to May 22, 1868. By this Act the Secretary of State of Canada was to hold ex officio the office of Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs.

    Department Change
    Pursuant to Statute 36 Victoria, c. 4, assented to May 3, 1873 and proclaimed in force July 1, 1873, the Minister of the Interior was to be ex officio the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs.

    Department Change
    Until 1883 the Minister of the Interior was ex officio the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs. In that year Statute 46 Victoria, c. 6, assented to May 25, 1883, provided for the Minister of the Interior, or the head of any other department appointed for that purpose by the Governor in Council, to hold the office ex officio. By Order in Council dated October 17, 1883 the President of the Privy Council was designated to be Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs. On October 3, 1887, the office was transferred back to the Minister of the Interior.

    Department Change
    The offices of Minister of Immigration and Colonization, Minister of the Interior, Minister of Mines and Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs were abolished and the office of Minister of Mines and Resources was created by Statute 1 Edward VIII, c. 33, assented to June 23, 1936 and proclaimed in force December 1, 1936.

    Department Change
    On June 19, 1930 the Minister of Immigration and Colonization was designated by Order in Council to be ex officio Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs.
  • 1930-08-07
    Department Change
    On August 7, 1930, the Governor in Council cancelled the aforesaid Order in Council and thus the Minister of the Interior once again held the office ex officio.
  • 1869-12-08
    Department Change
    By Order in Council dated December 8, 1869, pursuant to Section 40 of the aforesaid Act, the duties and powers of the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs were transferred to the Secretary of State for the Provinces and were exercised by him until June 30, 1873.

    The offices of Minister of Immigration and Colonization, Minister of the Interior, Minister of Mines and Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs were abolished and the office of Minister of Mines and Resources was created by Statute 1 Edward VIII, c. 33, assented to June 23, 1936 and proclaimed in force December 1, 1936.
