Secretary of State of Canada (1867-07-01 - 1996-07-11)

The offices of Secretary of State of Canada, Registrar General of Canada and Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs were created by Statute 31 Victoria, c. 42, assented to May 22, 1868. By this Act the Secretary of State of Canada was to hold these latter two offices ex officio. By Order in Council dated December 8, 1869, pursuant to section 40 of the aforesaid Act, the duties and powers of the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs were transferred to the Secretary of State for the Provinces.

    Department Change
    The Secretary of State of Canada was ex officio the Registrar General of Canada until September 30, 1966. Statute 14-15 Elizabeth II, c. 25, assented to June 16, 1966 and proclaimed in force October 1, 1966, created the separate ministerial office of Registrar General of Canada.

    Department Change
    Pursuant to Statute 8-9 Edward VII, c. 13, assented to May 19, 1909 and proclaimed in force June 1, 1909, the Secretary of State of Canada was to preside ex officio over the Department of External Affairs. He held the office until March 31, 1912.

    Department Change
    Pursuant to Statute 6-7 Edward VII, c. 29, assented to April 27, 1907, the Department of Mines was to be presided over by the minister of another department who was to be named by the Governor in Council. The Secretary of State of Canada was designated to be ex officio the Minister of Mines on February 10, 1913. He held the office until December 30, 1919.

    This portfolio was not specifically created by statute, but was recognized by the Salaries Act (Statute 31 Victoria, c. 33) assented to May 22, 1868. By Order in Council dated December 8, 1869, pursuant to section 40 of Statute 31 Victoria, c. 42, assented to May 22, 1868, the duties and powers of the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs, previously held by the Secretary of State of Canada, were transferred to the Secretary of State for the Provinces and were exercised by him until June 30, 1873.

  • Citizenship and Immigration (1994-06-23 -  )

    The office of Minister of Citizenship and Immigration was recreated by Statute 42-43 Elizabeth II, c. 31 (1994), assented to and in force June 23, 1994.
